How to Get Parenting Time

Your court order should include parenting time provisions. If it does not, the friend of the court can offer only very limited help with parenting time issues.

A motion is a written request that asks a judge to make a decision regarding an issue in a case.

To file a motion:

  • You may hire a lawyer to help you.

  • You may use forms available at the friend of the court office. The forms contain instructions to help you file them. For more information, see forms.

Sometimes a mediator can help you and the other parent reach an agreement on parenting time without the need for a formal motion or a court hearing. The friend of the court will provide information about the mediation services that are available in your county.
