Court orders

My child’s other parent and I agree about parenting time. Do we need to get a court order?

You have the right to determine your own parenting time schedule. It is important to put your agreement in writing. The court can formalize your agreement in a court order. If your parenting time agreement is not put in a court order, the friend of the court cannot assist you with enforcing your agreement if a dispute occurs.

How do I get a copy of my court order?

Contact your county clerk’s office. There may be a fee.

My court order gives me "reasonable" parenting time. We can’t agree on a schedule. Can I get the order changed?

You can file a motion to modify your court order to get more specific parenting time. The forms to do this are available at the friend of the court office.

What can I do if the other parent does not follow the court order?

You can complain in writing to the friend of the court. After you file the complaint and if you have a court order with specific provisions for parenting time, the friend of the court will help you enforce the order.
